i am on the chexsystem because of an old bank account at First Niagara Bank. it was a very long time ago and honestly I haven’t even thought about it. i don’t know if i still owe them money, but if i do, how do i go about finding out how much i still owe them and to then get off of the chexsystem list?

Dear Tina — Do you know how long ago your problem with First Niagara Bank occurred? If it was over 7 years ago, then the problem or negative item should be removed from your report. If it is within 7 years, you should order a copy of your chexsystems consumer report and see exactly what the problem is (you may also find other information that you may not know about). Once you get a copy of your chexsystems consumer report, come back to this site to learn how to read (and dispute) items on your report.

Good luck!

Dear Sudesh – Sorry to hear about your banking problems. As a first step, it sounds like you absolutely need to order a copy of your chexsystems report (you can get it for free from http://www.chexhelp.com). Once you get a copy, read it carefully. You need to figure out exactly what negative information is on the report. Once you figure out what is on there, see if you can get it removed. For help in getting it removed, you may want to try ordering the book about ChexSystems removal from http://www.getoffchex.com. Also, you may just want to consider getting a second chance bank account (such as the excellent AccountNow Visa account) — it may have all the banking features you need. Good luck, and please keep us posted with your progress.

Ok Here is a weird one that driving me nuts. I had transffered money from my BofA credit card to my BofA checking (as cash advace), then I went to the bank to withdraw the money. For a reason unknown to me, they denied, they did not give me the money, they blocked all my BofA checking and savings accounts and later closed them. The money with Credit Card had cleared……meaning the cash advance transfer has gone through. Then I find out that my Wells Fargo account is frozen because of a ChexSystem alert placed by BofA…..This is extremely puzzling to me and frustrating….
I had money in my accounts to begin with, I have not bounced any checks, no overdraft has ever occured and I do not owe a cent on my BofA checkings or Savings……Can you explain to me how this is even legal on BofA part to put me on ChexSystem in this case. Now all my money is frozen at BofA AND Wells Fargo…these kind of practice should be illegal, at the least.

Okay here is one for you check this out.
It started with depositing a check getting a receipt, which included the initial deposit and funds availability. I would deposit a check and I was told that the funds were immediately available. I would do the grocery shopping and pay bills the same day thinking I was covered. The change in policy came with regards to how their computer sorted everything out. The new Bank of America policy was to put through all the charges first and then the deposit if they fell within the same day.

This change in policy caused several NSF’s and then they took the fees from the money that had been deposited, which left us overdrawn on any other transactions that occurred after this initial action. We called and disputed the charges and tried to go as high up as possible regarding the matter. There was a $400 dollar deficit all due to over draft charges. We disputed this and at the same time stopped depositing money into that account as it left us behind in paying the actual bill each month. My husband was trying to resolve the issue and was awaiting yet another phone call regarding this matter when I learned that Bank of America had reported us to Chexsystems as “Abuse of Account.”

I felt this was an easy way for the bank to get more money as we had a free checking account and tried to be careful. They took over $500 dollars in fees not including the $400 dollar deficit and left us with no money to cover the monthly bills. They said the would credit us $43 dollars only. I just want to point out that this occurred during the major economy crash and they took money from the government bailout program. Bad faith.

I had some one get a hold of my debit card number back in the summer. It was in August before the charges showed up on my statement and I didn’t look at that statement. In September I had a NSF charge come through on my account and that’s when I noticed the problem. I called the companies on my statement and they were unwilling to refund my money. I closed the account out and paid all charges. Now the bank is denying me an account and no one can tell me why. I have asked for a copy of the report and waiting for it to come in the mail. What can I do now?

Hi GT — did you report the transactions as “unauthorized” (or fraudulent) to the bank? The bank’s investigation group should have looked into it for you. Just because you didn’t find out about it for a month doesn’t mean that you needed to pay for the charges. If the charges were truly unauthorized, your bank should have worked with you to reverse the charges. Also, if you used a Visa or MasterCard, you might have enjoyed extra protections.
