Why You Need a Bank Account Even if You Are On ChexSystems

in ChexSystems, Second Chance Banking

Having a bank account is almost essential in today’s society. Most people take having a bank account for granted. Those of us who have ended up on ChexSystems’ list don’t take them for granted anymore—the expense and frustration of having to rely on Check Cashing stores and Money Orders can get old quickly!

The simple fact is that bank accounts make life simpler and cheaper. What other reasons do you need? Millions of people don’t have bank accounts. Some don’t have a bank account because they don’t want one (for example, many illegal immigrants don’t get a bank account for fear of being reported to the immigration services, other people don’t get a bank account because they mistrust banks, etc.). Many others don’t have a bank account because they are on the list maintained by ChexSystems.

You can read more about what ChexSystems is, and how you get on their “bad” list. However, this article is about why you need a bank account, and how you can get one even if you are on ChexSystems’ list.

The benefits of having a bank account become clear when you imagine a day with a bank account, and one without.

Susan doesn’t have a bank account. She’s happy, because it’s payday, and she needs to cash her paycheck so she can buy groceries and pay some bills. To cash her check, Susan goes to the nearest Check Cashing store, waits in line, and pays a Check Cashing fee of $12. While she’s there, she buys several money orders so that she can pay her phone bill and her rent bill. Susan pays an extra $4 for each. Susan also has to buy stamps and mail both of the money orders. She finishes her errands by paying cash for groceries at the grocery store. By the end of the day, Susan has paid $20 (plus stamps) for her errands.

Susan’s co-worker Donna does have a bank account. She has the same errands to run. Her day goes like this: she checks her bank balance online, and confirms that her paycheck was directly deposited into her account. While she’s checking, she also uses the free online bill payment service offered by her bank to pay her rent bill and her phone bill. Donna then goes to the grocery store, and pays for her groceries using her debit card. She also uses her debit card to get $20 of spending money out of her account. Donna’s bank charges her an ATM fee of $1.50. So, by the end of Donna’s day, she has paid only $1.50, and has saved lots of time—she didn’t need to wait in line or go to a Check Casher to do her business.

Bank accounts open up a world of other opportunities as well. By having a bank account, you can:

  • Save money and start building a nest egg (some checking accounts let you earn interest on your deposits);
  • Start to build a better credit history so you can enjoy cheaper loans, credit cards, and insurance rates;
  • Build a relationship with a bank so that you can get credit from the bank;
  • Easily send money to relatives (even overseas!);
  • Buy things by phone or over the Internet; and
  • Get cash out of ATMs around the world.

Having a bank account is sometimes referred to as the first step in the “pathway to credit”. It’s important that you take that first step!

But I’m On the ChexSystems List. How Do I Open a Bank Account?

There is bad news and good news. The bad news is that experts estimate that 80-90% of all banks use ChexSystems to make their new account decisions. That means that you have a pretty slim chance of finding a bank that doesn’t use ChexSystems. The good news is that there are a few banks that don’t use ChexSystems. The difficulty is in finding one of those banks.

Luckily, resources are available (but be careful!). On the Internet, you can find a number of sources that claim to provide lists of banks that don’t use ChexSystems. Unfortunately, many of these lists are out of date. One list we saw had over 100 banks on it—but it was so out of date that only 3 of the banks actually did not use ChexSystems. Don’t pay for one of these lists.

We provide a free list of banks that don’t use ChexSystems. The list is current and up-to-date (only a few banks are on the list, but they all don’t use ChexSystems, and some guarantee 100% approval!).

Take your first step to get back on the path to credit. Save time and save money—open a bank account today!

Bank overdraft fees are becoming absolutely ridiculous. On my site, we get 4-5 people a day complaining about being unfairly charged. Bank of America has just agreed to now charges up to 10 overdraft fees per day at $39 a pop. Considering how they re-order transactions to optimize their fees, this is going to seriously hurt even more customers. Its time to stand up against these policies and demand change.

Give your business to local Credit Unions and Community banks – ENOUGH WITH GIVING BIG BANKS BUSINESS – LOOK AT WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO OUR COUNTRY WHILE THEY GET AWAY WITH FAT PROFITS OFF THOSE WHO WORK HARD TO LIVE PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK *****WRITE TO THE FEDERAL RESERVE AND LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE FED UP WITH THESE UNETHICAL AND IMMORAL BANKING PRACTICES!!!

Don’t forget BofA also charges ANOTHER overdraft fees if you don’t pay the amount owed within 5 days. Yup, you heard me right. So that accidently dollar overdraft is now ranking them in a good $500 bucks once they rearrange the fees to look how they want it to.
The person that wrote this article is sorely mistaken. There are other options that cost less than what stupid BofA charges. First you can go to the bank the check is drawn on and they will cash it for you. I pay a whole 5 dollars per month to get my check cashed at the bank is drawn off of and that’s not because I don’t have a bank account. It’s because BofA would put a million day hold on my check and then charge me an overdraft if I tried to use any of it. Once I’m done with all the fees they charge me to hold and lend out my money I’m broke! Also, Wal-Mart and Western Union have great reloadable pre-paid cards. My father and I use this option because if there is no money on the card they do not let you use it unlike BofA. In fact, I just load the card at Von’s grocery store whenever I need the funds. No need to wait for banking hours. As for $4 dollar money orders …yeah try more like 80 cents at Western Union and even less at the post office ..which again is less than the cost of checks and fees the banks rack in. It’s actually all very convenient too. I go to Vons reload my card, get an 80cent money order while I’m there and voila! And this is coming from someone that has TWO bank accounts.

Hi Antwon — unfortunately, there isn’t a great list. Here are some recent tips we’ve received from readers: try going into your local BofA and opening an account. If they deny you, ask if the manager can explain in detail why you were denied (you should be able to find out what the blemish is on your chexsystems report that prevented you from opening the account). here’s another reader tip: check out Woodforest Bank (they have a great second chance checking program). Another tip: check out all of your local credit unions (there’s a great chance that you qualify to join one or two). And another tip: why not open a prepaid debit card account? Almost everyone that uses them agrees that they are often BETTER than a regular bank account (just make sure to shop around to find one that fits your situation).

Credit Unions used to be the answer but they now use Chexsystems as well. They are becoming just like the big banks in courtesy overdrafts and processing checks from largest to least or which ever way they want to hit you with fees and report you to chexsystems. Some banks have Second Chance checking and so do some credit unions….in view of the financial crisis that the big banks caused and have paid very little for I would give my business to a local bank or credit union.

Listen up! everybody who is trying to find a bank that does not use chexsystems. Right now for whatever reason Bank of America is opening all accounts that are opened online. It doesn’t matter if you are in chexsystems, they are not turning down anyone. I’m in chexsystems and I owe several banks, however my cousin told me about BofA and she was right! I filled out an applicaiton online on a saturday and on that Monday they sent me my approval email. Wednesday they sent my banking package via mail. Maybe because of the economy, but whatever the reason go to BofA you won’t be turned down. If they gave me an account they will give anybody one.

Hello Nancy Lynn, Did you owe bank of america? I do but not a large amount. I would be willing to pay it off if they will open it. Let me know what you think. Thanks
